What is a cocktail dress?

In short, cocktail dress is nothing more than formal attire, but more casual. It's more casual than your office wear and a little more formal than formal casual. Usually, cocktail dress is a collective term, anniversaries, parties, engagements, weddings and other events are typical occasions for cocktail parties, and the appropriate dresses are collectively referred to as cocktail dresses.

What are women's cocktail apparels?

The general rule of thumb for cocktail party clothing is that it can't be skimpy, see-through, too short or too long. Basically, something between the formal and casual spectrum. From the classic little black dress (LBD) to A-line, strapless, embellished, lace or long-sleeved midi dresses are the right choice for you.

8 Must-Know Dos and Don'ts of Women's Cocktail Dresses

1. Don't wear light dresses/can accentuate your hem

Don't post any transparent, shoddy clothing at cocktail parties, or clothing that draws you unwanted attention. Pay attention to your neckline, don't be too sexy. Little black dresses are a timeless choice, sleeveless dresses, sweetheart necklines, long sleeves, it's all optional.

2. Don't wear oversized dresses / can wear midi dresses

Avoid wearing dresses that are too long and oversized to a cocktail party. Midi size dresses are the perfect cocktail dress if shorter dresses are not your thing.

3. Don't wear jeans / can wear other kinds of trousers

Jeans may be your ultimate comfort outfit, but since they don't fall into the formal wear category, they're not suitable for cocktail parties. Instead, suit trousers or another silk or chiffon shirt with a pearl necklace, which is an excellent choice.

4. Don't carry huge bags / can carry handbags

As a woman, I know we want our bags to be like a small convenience store where we can always have what we need, as often carry an oversized bag, but for a cocktail party, change that. Women's small backpack is a good choice, you can also take a small and stylish handbag, if you think the bag is not big enough, then you can put the big bag in the car, and put the absolutely necessary things such as money, mobile phones, etc. Put it in the handbag.

5. No slippers / high heels or high heel sandals are acceptable

We all like to wear slippers or flip-flops when we are leisure, and that feeling is very comfortable. In a cocktail party, not only slippers, boots, flat sandals are not suitable. High-heeled shoes, platform high-heeled shoes, high-heeled sandals, etc. slightly formal can be worn at the reception.

6. Don't have too many accessories / can match one or two accessories

Accessories are very useful in enhancing the overall effect of your clothing, but excessive matching of accessories and jewelry is definitely not suitable for a reception. Only need one or two accessories like bracelets, rings, necklaces, but keep them to a minimum for the finishing touch.

7. Don’t wear crumpled clothes / consider dry cleaning or ironing your garments

If you're considering a trouser suit, fancy trousers or jumpsuit, make sure it's flat, not crumpled. Just iron with a clean cleaner. Plus, you usually have plenty of time to prepare for the event, so lack of time is no excuse.

8. Don’t let your underwear or straps show/use strapless bras or bras

Never let your coat be sheer or translucent, or wear an off-the-shoulder coat at a cocktail party. That way your bra will show through, or your shoulder straps will be exposed, which is fine.
